Kanban is, in concept, a simple process that can have great benefits in manufacturing by assisting in providing a continuous supply of materials needed to produce the needed products. Like all lean manufacturing tools, it has the potential to influence the way we think and approach problems within the operations environment. Proper execution of kanban should link the entire supply chain from your customer through your own internal manufacturing process, including raw materials, and drive at least one level down in the supply chain. This scope allows the manufacturer to have a long-term view of customer consumption, production volume ebbs and flows, and supplier issues far out into the future. To have proper visibility at this level, the customer, production floor and all suppliers need to be brought together by the manufacturer to architect a proper solution at the start of the kanban discussion with the goal of providing the customer with the highest level of service (on time delivery) possible. Once put in place, it becomes somewhat self-sustaining with less effort, which leaves skilled resources with more opportunity to focus on problematic issues versus just grinding through volumes of repetitive replenishment functions. In this session, you will learn how Firstronic LLC was able to become better focused, achieve greater efficiency, reduce waste and increase their inventory turns by implementing a kanban system.
